This has been a time of dramatic transformation,

and you have risen to every new change.

You have made our social fabric stronger,

our family healthier and safer

and people more prosperous.

You, the American people, have made our passage

into the global information age,

an era of great American renew.

If I had my life to live over again,

to read some poetry and listen to some music

to convert retreat into advance}

but I will defend <to the death>

your right to say it.

11/ Demoncracy

Man's capacity (for justice)

makes democracy possible,

but man's inclination (to injustice)

makes democracy necessary. 

12/ Choice

Here is the problem

{which I present to you}

stark and dreadful and inescapable:

Shall we put an end to the human race

or shall mankind renounce war?

People will not face this alternative

because it is so difficult to abolish war.

I appeal, <as a human being to human beings>:

remember your humanity, and forget the rest. 

If you can do so,

the way lies open to a new Paradise;

if  you cannot,

nothing lies before you

but universal death.
